Lipoic Acid, also called Alpha Lipoic Acid or Thiotic Acid, is a potent antioxidant also known as the “universal” antioxidant for its ability to dissolve in both water and fat. Antioxidants are important to combat the effects of free radicals, unstable molecules that can disrupt whole cells and are thought to be responsible for cell damage and aging. IS IT MAGIC? THE STORY OF LIPOIC ACID.

What is Lipoic Acid?

Lipoic Acid, also called Alpha Lipoic Acid or Thiotic Acid, is a potent antioxidant also known as the “universal” antioxidant for its ability to dissolve in both water and fat. Antioxidants are important to combat the effects of free radicals, unstable molecules that can disrupt whole cells and are thought to be responsible for cell damage and aging.

What Do People Use It For?

Promotion of Weight Loss and Increased Energy

Your body’s cells need lipoic acid to be able to metabolize sugars into energy. When you more efficiently turn sugars into energy, you have more energy and that sugar does not have a chance to turn into fat! As people get older, they often have difficulty with this process. When a person has problems with this they often have a build up of fat, especially around the waist, and have problems losing weight. Some of our customers have reported a reduction in cellulite after several months use of Lipoic Acid.

Use in Diabetes and Diabetic Neuropathy

In Germany, Lipoic Acid is officially approved for use in patients with diabetic neuropathy, a condition where the patient can experience severe burning and aching pains in their body, most often in their extremities. This pain and burning comes from damage to the nerves. Most patients are given pain medications or even narcotics for the discomfort. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota recently completed a study showing that Lipoic Acid significantly improved symptoms of diabetic neuropathy without complications. Some diabetics are able to lower their medications when using Lipoic Acid.

Promotion of Liver Repair

Lipoic Acid’s anti-oxidant qualities have been used by some practitioners to help with liver problems. In a medical article(1), Dr. Burton Berkson described the use of Lipoic Acid, along with silymarin and selenium, to treat three patients with extensive liver disease caused by hepatitis C. Using that combination, all three patients were able to avoid liver transplantation and could return to work feeling healthy!

One person who used Bevko Vitamins supplements has the following story:

“Carol” is a lovely woman in her early 40’s who contracted hepatitis C. Over the course of three years she felt more and more tired as her levels of virus climbed. She took the standard treatments of interferon and ribavarin for 8 months. This treatment made her ill and had no effect on her disease. It then took another 8 months for her to recover from the side effects of the treatment. After taking Lipoic Acid along with other supplements and going on a healthy diet she was much improved in her energy, and her viral count went from 66 million down to 14.5 million in four months!

Assisting in Memory and Brain function

In Europe, some researchers have found that Lipoic Acid can have a positive effect on long-term memory in older mice. The authors of these studies believe that Lipoic Acid can compensate for age-related long-term memory loss. Some scientists believe that Lipoic Acid may be helpful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s and other neurological problems. Yet other studies show that Lipoic Acid may help preserve more brain tissue after a stroke.

Help in Reducing Effects of Strokes and Heart Attacks

Heart attacks and strokes are caused by blood vessel disease. Some scientists believe that antioxidants can help protect blood vessels from the development of clogged arteries. Lipoic Acid may help regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione to help protect your blood vessels. Researchers estimate that the addition of antioxidants by supplementation could decrease the risk of heart attack by 20-30%!(2)

Help in Reducing Cataract Formation

In studies where experimental cataracts are induced in lab mice, there was a significant reduction of cataracts in animals that were given Lipoic Acid. It is felt that the reason Lipoic Acid was so effective in prevention of cataracts in these animals because of its ability to recycle Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Glutathione in the lens of the eyes.

Why European Lipoic Acid?

Bevko Vitamins became interested in Lipoic Acid after hearing Dr. Burt Berkson (above) speak at a medical conference. When asked where the best and most effective Lipoic Acid could be obtained, he stated that it had to come from Europe, as they had the only reliable method of production. At that time, this was not available in the USA. After a year of searching, Bevko Vitamins found a company that could import solvent-free European Lipoic Acid and the results speak for themselves! Try it today for better health.
