4 Core Strengthening Exercises

Your core is responsible for keeping you upright, stable and balanced. Doing core strengthening exercises can improve your posture and provide extra support for your spine and hips. Here are some basic core exercises you can perform every day to strengthen your core. 

Glute Bridges

Glute Bridges target the hamstrings, lower back, abs and, of course, the glutes. It’s a great exercise for strengthening your lower abdominal region and back muscles. To perform a glute bridge, lay on your back with your knees bent and feet on the ground with hip length apart. Then, lift your hips up to the maximum level, lifting your back off the ground, lower back down and repeat.

Crunch

Crunches are widely known to help strengthen the abdominal muscles. However, they only target the abs and other core muscles so it is important to add other exercises with them. To do a crunch, lay on your back with your legs hips length apart, feet flat on the floor. Cross your arms over your chest or brace your hands behind your neck and lift your upper torso into the crunch, chin reaching upwards. Retreat back to the ground.

Plank

Planks are a great compound workout to target multiple muscle groups that use your core strength to keep your body held up for the goal time. To perform a plank, just assume the push up position and hold for at least 30 seconds.

Clamshell Leg Lifts

Targeting the lower abdominals, clamshell leg lifts are a low impact, gentle exercise that also works your hip flexor muscles, glutes and lower back. All you need to do is to lay on your side, knees bent, and lift your top leg into the air and slowly lower it back down.
